Heavy Lift I

3 × 45' (ENG, GER)

The story of the engineers and mechanics behind some of the largest lifting and moving equipment in the world.

This series tells the story of how huge objects move. If Archimedes said "Give me a lever and I will move the world", today the answer is usually wheels and hydraulics. Lifting and moving massive machinery or structures is the speciality of a handful of companies and the equipment they use is often tailor made for the job, be they cranes, trailers, flatbeds, barges, and even ship carriers.

We draw on the joint experience, to present a whole new ongoing series of documentaries on the men and machines that move huge things. Heavy Lift tells the story of the engineers and mechanics behind some of the largest lifting and moving equipment in the world, without which some of the most impressive works of human construction simply would not work.

The stories are land and sea based, they cover advanced technology and simple but large engineering subjects, from lifting silos to shifting ships, from contributing to city saving to building alternative energy sources – it is all in a day's work for the Movers and Lifters.

These are stories of men and machine too: teams of men who come together to make something big move, horizontally or vertically. They work together and together succeed or, in some cases fail. They often travel long distances together, and cook, eat, sleep as a community. From the engineers to the crane operators to the truck drivers, they work in unison and know their equipment intimately.

Their machines are the largest, tallest, heaviest and most powerful in the world. Cranes, trucks and trains, skids, strandjacks, these machines are designed to multiply the force of gravity or the power of pulleys.

Episodes

  1. Moving the Mose

An in-depth look at the science behind saving Venice from high water floods and the construction and engineering of one of the world’s largest mobile surge barriers, which aims to keep high water at bay in the Venice lagoon. As the last stages of this complex 40-year mega public works project are being completed, suspense builds as to whether or not this innovative but controversial maritime engineering gamble will actually work.

  2. Jumboization

An in-depth look at the complex heavy lift process of taking an old ship, cutting it in half and stretching it – an operation called Jumboisation, increasingly common as the demand in the lucrative cruise industry for bigger ships that can haul more and more passengers.

  3. The Antonov Dream

The Antonov An 225 Myra is the world's largest plane, and only one example was ever built. Exclusively filmed in the Antonov factory in Kiev, this documentary tells the story of the development of the aircraft on the basis of the worlds second largest plane, the An 125. The Myra was built to carry Russia's version of the Space shuttle – the Buran. All this of course before the break-up of the Soviet Union. The program features exciting walk-around footage of the Mrya and interviews with the engineers who built it. We take the viewer back to the days when carrying military equipment far and fast was the key to success in a potential third world war. That conflict never happened but since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of an independent Ukraine, the Antonov desiogn bureau and factory, and Antonov Airlines company have provided some of the most impressive transport over the last decade, contracted by governments to move emergency relief supplies, military equipment and industrial parts.
