Venice - The Whole Story

2015
2 x 45' (ENG, GER)

Witness the rise and fall of Venice and a desperate race against time to save a sinking city.

Using the multi-million euro renovation of Rialto Bridge by fashion entrepreneur Renzo Rosso (Diesel) as a starting point, this breath-taking documentary tells the story of Venice, from its maritime republic beginnings to the ground-breaking efforts to save the sinking city. Let us take you on a journey through the meandering canals, looking at fashion, culture and archaeology for an epic renovation of one of the most famous bridges in the world. The controversial impact of big cruise ships, global climate change and other threats to the Venice lagoon are covered in depth, as is the engineering behind a 7 billion euro project to build a massive underwater surge barrier that rises out of the sea when high tides threaten to flood the ancient city.

The film features in-depth interviews with activists, engineers, architects, historians and benefactors who know Venice best and are working to save it. These experts give us the whole backstage story of how Venice was actually built and the extraordinary efforts necessary to save it from disappearing beneath the sea.
