Tropical diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, chikungunya and West Nile virus were long considered a distant threat – but now they have reached Europe.

In 2025 France reported a record number of locally transmitted chikungunya cases, while the West Nile virus is circulating in Germany. Climate change and global mobility are enabling invasive mosquito species such as the Asian tiger mosquito to spread. How serious is the threat on our doorstep?
