Chasing the Northern Lights

Well above the Arctic circle, in the far north of Norway, a small town named Tromsø is experiencing a new kind of Klondike. People from all over the world are travelling halfway across the globe to get to the arctic town. The reason: to experience the Northern Lights. While the arriving visitors are looking for the experience of their lifetime, the local population works around the clock to keep the guests happy. Guide-Gunnar was one of the first to start the Northern Lights chasing, and we are joining him on an exciting Northern Lights chase. Ida is the general manager at Tromsø Camping and is nervous when expecting a large group of Saudi Arabians come to the campsite. Will cultural differences make the meeting challenging? We also meet Kurt Arild, a cruise ship owner who prepares his luxury boat for a trip the same group from Saudi Arabia. And then we meet Hans-Olav, one of the biggest players in the tourism industry in Tromsø. He has been successful in building a wilderness camp, from a single tent to a million-dollar business and has now launched his most risky project ever: the northern most whiskey distillery in the world: Aurora Spirit. Hans-Olav has hired Instagram celebrity and model Lasse Matberg to be the distillery's face outward.

Gunnar is starting to get tired of the mass tourism in Tromsø, dreaming of traveling to Alta to find the silence he no longer finds in Tromsø's outskirts. Ida still has the the Saudi Arabian group visiting and tells them about when she as a child herself lived in Saudi Arabia. Hans Olav is launching the PR strategy for the distillery, and is bout to have his directorial debut, as he himself ha decided to direct the first photoshoot with Instagram celebrity and model Lasse Matberg. During the evening, both Trine, Guide-Gunnar, Ida and Hans Olav are out in the open air to experience the northern lights, and the night sky delivers.

We meet Roar and Karen, a Sami couple working with reindeer in the wilderness camp of Hans-Olav. Hans Olav, on his part, must rush out to the camp to try and fix a disaster that can cost Roar and Karen tens of thousands of dollars.

In this episode, the whole Tromsø region is struggling with bad weather, and none of the activities go as planned. Cancellations provide disappointed tourists and frustrated operators. Guide Gunnar must make the tough choice of whether he is going to go cancel his tour or not. Terje and Anne Stine, who runs a husky camp, have a good experience in the midst of all the rainy weather, they get 5 new puppies. The only one who does not have to worry about the weather is Hans Olav, he is awaiting a visit to the distillery from both the EU Minister and the Minister for Commerce. Once they arrive, he only has one little hour to present the challenges the entrepreneurial business is facing. Roar and Karen have to say goodbye to one of their oldest reindeer, while at the husky camp a new batch of dogs are arriving.

Hans Olav has a day job, in addition to running 6 different travel companies. He is a physician and general practitioner as well. Today he is running his own health check reveal whether the hectic everyday life goes beyond his own health?

Ida, general manager at Tromsø Camping, gets a visit from her boyfriend Ole. He hopes for a romantic evening but is instead being put to work at the campsite. Hans Olav's everyday life is filled to the verge of work, and as a family father with 5 children, there is also no break at home. At the husky camp, we see the formidable work the staff daily put down to make the tourists have a good experience on the dog sled. And in the family business, Trine tells about how her mother's death has affected the relationship with her father.

Being a good guide takes years, and Frans Jakob learns to appreciate Gunnar's focus on detail. Hans-Olav and his whiskey distillery will be put to their biggest test so far when they attend the Tromsø Whiskey Festival. One of Norway's foremost whiskey makers will give his judgement. Kurt Arild has brought a Filipino group onboard the luxury boat. In order to operate the whole trip alone, Kurt Arild has invented a remote control to steer the boat.

At the husky camp, they only have two tourists, and they also have to be convinced that the dogs will not attack them. Gunnar is tired after a long season and in a bad mood when the municipality asks him to take down his advertising signs. We are joining Hans Olav when he goes home to his grandparents' house, a place he sees as his childhood home. Teasing, anger and finally a radical change were part of his childhood. Trine and Alf attempt to balance the roles of both colleagues and father and daughter in the family business.

The whole family will be involved, and the packing is challenging when 4 children, several kilos of magazines and frozen lefser are part of the luggage. The husky camp is finished for the season and are about to go home for the season. It becomes a tough farewell to Stine.

Gunnar celebrates the end of his 20th season as a tourist guide and is completely surprised when the whole of Tromsø's tourism industry honors him.
