Golden Eagle – Call of the Wild
On average, only one of five fledglings will make it past its first winter. "Golden Eagle – Call of the Wild" lets the viewer feel the intense struggle to survive the extreme conditions of the high Alps.
This two-parter plays in a class of its own, starting out with the very first moments in an eagle's life. Halfway up a towering precipice, in a tiny rocky niche, we watch a small fluffy chick pecking its way out of its eggshell. We see two siblings, deadly enemies from the first moment of their lives, fighting for survival of the fittest. We see the winner learn how to fly and how to hunt. Throughout an entire year, we follow the young bird on an adventurous odyssey from tender parental care to independence and on its challenging search for a territory of its own. Intimate images let us feel the heat of the battle when the youngster is attacked by hostile raptors, and we watch break-neck air attacks on animals of prey.

Growing Up
Its setting is the infinite space between heaven and earth, between ice-clad Alpine peaks, rugged ridges and one yawning abyss after the other. Its main protagonist is the sovereign of this lofty realm, a master glider and a silent hunter of whom, in real life, one might get a lucky glimpse as a distant dark spot against a dazzling white cloud. But this film swaps perspectives. Otmar Penker, an award-winning Austrian filmmaker, takes his audience up into the skies to let them see the world from a golden eagle's point of view.
