Heroes of the Deep I

With their ship, the "BT2", the crew of the Ostseetaucher travels to the Wohlenberger Wiek to clear an area on the bottom of the Baltic Sea for later construction work. A risky job for the two divers Tobi and Andreas, as there were some iron-magnetic suspicious points that point with a high probability of bombs, ammunition or other warfare agents from the Second World War. Millions of tons of it are still lurking in the Baltic Sea.

The BT2 and its crew are getting ready for their next mission - this time, the Danish territorial waters are their destination. Also on board: the most modern diving robot of our time. The VALOR ROV is equipped with first-class sensors, high-resolution cameras and a system that enables live images from the ROV to be transmitted directly to land. Just getting the 80 kg device on board the Baltic2 is a planning-intensive act in which everyone has to be fully concentrated.

Within sight of Rügen, the Baltic Sea divers drop anchor to salvage so-called ghost nets. The lost plastic ghost nets, weighing many hundreds of kilos, sometimes represent deadly traps for all sea creatures, which is why their clearance is a real matter of the heart, especially for diver Erik. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old dives with due caution to the wreck of the fishing cutter "Friedrich Engels" that sank in 1973.

Together with research divers, the Baltic Sea divers want to try to capture unique images of harbor porpoises looking for food. There colleagues meanwhile have a job on their own doorstep, but salvaging a ship that has sunk in the port of Rostock is anything but easy. The 17 meter long fishingcutter has sunk deep into the silt of the harbor basin.
