Russia's Horses

5 × 52' (ENG), 5 × 45' (GER, FRE)

With its endless plains, deep forests and inaccessible mountain ranges, the Russian Empire never could have been built without horses.

"People are reflected in their horses" is an old Russian proverb, that still finds great value in today's Russian culture. But what exactly is meant by this saying? Fact is: Russia’s Horses are not like the ones from Western Europe: though seemingly plain, they are tough, tenacious, undemanding, and obedient. But is that also true of the Russians? What do we know about them and their lifestyle? As we travel into the most remote areas of Russia meeting the locals, we learn what connects the people to their beloved horses.

These animals were urgently needed to take their soldiers into battle. Till well into the 20th century, they were needed for the cultivation of crops and transport. Even today, they are an essential part of daily life in many regions of the vast Russian territory.

The diverse breeds of Russian horses – hardy riding animals, speedy trotters, hard-working pack animals, powerful cart horses and stoic ponies – are tough, vigorous and undemanding. But above all, they learned to adapt to various environments, just like the people who lived and worked with these cherished animals.

In Russia's Horses, we will roam the stunningly diverse landscapes of Russia and meet men and women from different Russian provinces. Their horses will provide the thematic link between all the stories. We will find that simply looking into their eyes is like gazing into the Russian soul.
